Ladies 4ths lose out in tough encounter

Halifax 4ths 2 – 5 York

Another tough game at the outset for Halifax, playing the second in the league York.

Halifax were going to start the game on the offensive, though, whilst trying to keep wide with a very defensive oriented team. Molly Midgeley playing her last game before she moves to the third team had some great runs in centre mid and has the pace to come back and defend when needed.

Halifax’s determination and strategy payed off when Gail Crabtree, right forward crossed a fantastic ball into the D to Captain Anj Wright who got low to the ball and scored the first goal of the match with a reverse stick sweep right past the goalie. Anj was already celebrating when the ball crossed the line it was such a good strike.

York came straight back to 1-1 with a confident and very pacey centre forward whom Halifax were struggling to mark and tackle. With about ten minutes to half time Halifax scored again – this time Gail scored with a great strike taking Halifax back into the lead.

However, York came straight back, a strong centre and centre mid placing the ball quite firmly in the back of the Halifax net. Helen Chadwick-Marshall (man of the match) had a great game in Right Midfield – using her strength to dribble past the majority of the York tackles – she kept this up throughout the match – a great game.

Even with two people marking their strongest player, York managed to get 3 goals in fairly quick succession in the second half – Sasha Pennyward in goals also had a great game – the final score of 5-2 not really justifying her solid performance, making herself a real presence against the attacking team.
