Halifax travelled to York expecting at hard fought battle with the home side, as they had been battling each other for the top spot for months.
Both teams started well with tight defences and play was moving from end to end. 20 minutes into the first half, York got through one on one with goal keeper Annie Staples and made it 1-0.
A rallying half time talk saw Halifax come hard out of the blocks in the second half. The midfield of Margaret Bottomley, Ruth Prosser, Claire Waldron, Adele Cocker and Lauren O'Neill worked hard to create chances for the forwards and it wasn't long before Michaela Holroyd scored to make the score level.
Halifax piled on the pressure and managed to get a penalty corner. Alison McManus came up from defence and smashed the ball into the net to put the away team ahead.
The forwards constantly worked hard and Dani Parker scored Halifax's third goal 15 mins from the end.
Halifax's defence of McManus, Sue Kelly, Tracey Helliwell and Jess Speight worked hard to keep the home side out but they managed to pull one back with 10 minutes to go.
The away side held York out to the final whistle and walked away with a vital win. Halifax need one point from their last two games to see them win Division 3.
