After being relegated last season, and with a point to prove, Ladies 2nd team got off to a great start to the season with a home victory against Acomb

Halifax Ladies 2nds 3-1 Acomb Ladies 1sts

Scorers: Waldron, Bottomley, Acomb OG

After being relegated last season down into Yorkshire Division 3, the Ladies 2nds had a point to prove in the first league match back this weekend. The team was raring to go and set off at a good pace. Acomb were a strong opposition and had some skillful players.

However, pre season training had ensured that Halifax had the upper hand when it came to fitness and this showed. Some great passing through midfield led to some great opportunities within the first few minutes, but Halifax were unable to convert. About 20 minutes in to the first half, Halifax were awarded a free hit just outside the 25. New captain, Jess Speight, came up from defence and crossed the ball into the ‘D’. The cross was picked up by Claire Waldron and she put the ball in the net, making it 1-0. Hard work from Ellen Campsall, Tracey Helliwell, Ruth Griffin, Adele Cocker and Margaret Bottomley in midfield really picked up the pace of the game. Left back Ruth Bury then picked up the ball in the Halifax half and made a storming run through midfield. She hit the ball into the ‘D’ and Bottomley made it 2-0 with a stunning deflection into the top right hand corner.

The introduction of a new rule, meaning own goals can now be scored, made the score 3-0 to Halifax not long after. Acomb then made a come back late in the first half and made it 3-1. The Halifax forwards, Waldron, Michaela Holroyd and Danielle Parker worked tirelessly in the second half, but were unable to convert. Alison McManus and Sue Kelly kept it tight at the back to ensure Acomb didn’t make a late comeback. A 3-1 win sees Halifax II 3rd in the table after the first game.

A great start to the new season
