Thirsk I 3-4 Halifax II
Halifax started well and found themselves in an unusual position this season, taking the lead, Louise Evans picking up the rebound from her own shot to fire past the keeper after ten minutes.
Thirsk began to take the ascendency and after a lot of pressure on the Halifax defence during which time Cat Vose made several vital clearances, Steph Hoyle conceded a penalty flick when the ball struck her foot on the goal line.
Stand-in keeper Beth Smith was a spectator as the Thirsk player took a fantastic flick, placing the ball into the top left corner. Halifax were in no mood to give in and they retook the lead soon after when Sara Woodhead’s shot was diverted into the corner of the goal by Vicki Ferdinando.
Thirsk drew level again ten minutes into the second half following a well worked short corner. Halifax were put under real pressure in the period following the equaliser but they were denied the lead, with some superb defending, particularly from April Hendy who stopped two shots on the line and Vose who stopped one as well as Smith in goal.
Against the run of play Courtenay Fisher picked up possession in midfield and went on a solo run, beating three defenders before firing a shot towards the Thirsk net. Harriet Wood met the shot with an open stick to deflect the ball high into the corner past the stranded keeper. Thirsk replied once again to draw the match level at 3-3.
With time running out Robyn Fawkes found Wood inside the Thirsk goal circle with an inviting pass which she sent across the goal mouth with a reverse sweep for Ferdinando to have the final say, deflecting it in to seal a hard earned 4-3 victory.
