Halifax 2’s faced a bottom of the table clash this Saturday, and with Halifax on zero points, and Leeds University 3’s on 15 points, things weren’t looking hopeful.
Despite the snow and bitter cold, Halifax went into the match with 11 strong players ready for a tough match.
The first half started with a high intensity, and Leeds were on form making sure their voices were heard in the Halifax dee. With the strong defence that Halifax have had all season, Leeds were denied time and time again, with Cat Vose and Steph Hoyle stepping up and keeping the shots away.
As the first half progressed, the shots were more frequent and the short corners were coming and going with Beccy Fisk refusing to let a goal get past her, and Beth Smith smothering the short corners as first runner. Unfortunately, Halifax were beaten in the last ten minutes of the first half with a smart touch from a Leeds forward to put it in the back of the net.
Half time came and went quickly, but Halifax were determined to come out strong having kept the Leeds attack at bay for so much of the first half. The teams were very closely matched, and throughout the second half both teams were having shots on goal and threatening the defence, with Leeds catching another good touch and getting their second goal of the match making it 2-0.
The last ten minutes of the match on the other hand played out very differently, the Halifax attack came alive, with Niamh Brennan getting Halifax’s first and second goal of the match in a mere five minutes.
At 2-2 the match was tense, both teams wanted the win badly and the ball kept getting caught up in midfield with nowhere to go. At 6 minutes to go, this was Halifax’s closest sight of victory, and with that in mind, Courtenay Fisher made the final score 3-2 to Halifax, getting their first league win of the season.
