2 wins out of 2 for Men's 1sts as they beat Lincoln 1sts 5-2

Halifax 1sts 5 v 2 Lincoln 1sts

Graham M 3, Bamforth, Mayland

Halifax Mens 1st X1 continued their good start to the season in Yorkshire 2 with a 5-2 win over a good Lincoln 1st team at Park Lane.

With 4 players missing from the previous weeks opening win, 2 players were drafted in from the 2nds and veteran coach Paul Graham was called into action.

The change of personel did not seem to upset the team too much and a tremendous flowing move involving Matthew Graham, Josh Sutcliffe, Tom Love and Richard Marshall ended with the former sliding the ball home for the opening goal inside the first minute. Kristian Mayland then made it 2-0 finishing off another fine move, to tap in his 1st goal for the 1st X1. Matthew Graham then hit a post from a penalty corner.

A hamstring injury to Richard Marshall seemed to upset the shape of the team and for the rest of the 1st half Lincoln became more threatening. Dave Wheatley, Michael Jones and Paul Graham defended well as the game became more competitive. There were some heavy tackles and tempers started to flare with Jones and Johnny Sutcliffe in the thick of it. From a Lincoln penalty flick just before 1/2 time, the visitors scored to get them back into the game.

After calming down at half time, Halifax came out and played some good hockey with Mayland playing well on the right and Love causing Lincoln problems on the left. Matthew Graham scored his second of the game ghosting in on the far post and finishing off a fine run and pass from Mayland. Jake Bamforth missed an open goal but made amends shortly after sweeping the ball in after being set up by Graham at a penaly corner (4-1). Lincoln were not giving up and reduced the arrears from a penalty corner.

Love was then sin binned for an over enthusiastic tackle and Halifax had to dig deep to keep Lincoln at bay. Matthew Metcalf made a couple of good saves to maintain the teams 2 goal advantage and Graham completed his hatrick to make the game safe after another flowing move.

Halifax go to Worksop next Saturday to play Worksop 1st X1 who have moved from The Midlands league. With some team members returning, competition for places will be good the lads are hoping to make in 3 straight wins.
