The Men's 1s squandered the points as Grimsby battled back to a 4-4 draw

It was a case of more dropped points on another wet and windy day at Park Lane High School.

Matthew Metcalfe was able to select one of his strongest sides so far this season and had hoped for 3 points against a Grimsby side who were also locked in a relegation battle, especially after his team took the lead 3 minutes into the game as skipper Jake Bamforth broke into the D and squared for fellow striker Matthew Graham to finish clinically at close range.

As is often the case, Halifax conceded whilst on being on top and Grimsby equalised when keeper Matty Breton allowed a shot to drift past him from a narrow angle.

The home side hit back immediately and Ben Greenwood’s mazy run into the area set up Michael Jones to deflect the ball high into the net. Jones was in the thick of the action and scored his side’s 3rd from a neat short corner routine.

Midfielder Andy Kaye was warned following a heavy challenge on a Grimsby player and the umpires warned that any subsequent challenges would result in dismissals for either side, but to the dismay of the home side they didn’t follow up with this threat and one particularly dangerous looking tackle went unpunished in the second half, changing the atmosphere of the game completely.

With a rattled Halifax side, Grimsby struck back – Breton again failed to deal with an innocuous looking penalty corner and the ball trickled over the line to bring the score back to 3-2.

Josh Barron increased the lead with a close range finish after excellent work from Andy Marsland and Tom Love, who returned to the side following a 3 match suspension for his red card versus Huddersfield, but another penalty corner from the visitors crept inside the far post despite Jones’ best efforts.

However Jones then turned villain after letting his frustrations boil over and his was sin binned for complaining, which took all the momentum away from the home side. Grimsby capitalised and grabbed their equaliser with 5 minutes to spare with a fantastic finish that Breton could not have saved.

Halifax pushed for a winner late on but despite some determined work rate from midfielder Josh Sutcliffe they were unable to find the back of the net and the clock ran down.

Halifax now face two tricky away trips before the Christmas break, with Boston Spa the next opponents.
