Halifax HC Enjoy Super Saturday
Halifax Hockey Club enjoyed an excellent weekend of results, with victories for both first teams, and both second teams. The standout result came from the Men's 1st XI, who produced a remarkable comeback to end Driffield's perfect start to the season, while the Ladies' 1st XI continued their relentless march at the top of the table.
Men’s 1st XI End Driffield's Perfect Record
Halifax Men's 1st XI produced one of their finest results of the season, recovering from two goals down to secure a dramatic 3-2 victory over previously unbeaten Driffield.
Halifax started brightly and created opportunities through Michael Jones, who twice found himself through on goal in the early stages but was unable to convert.
Driffield punished Halifax's missed chances and struck twice before the break, leaving the hosts facing an uphill task at 0-2.
A tactical reshuffle at half-time transformed the contest. Harry Crane and Tom Love provided an excellent platform up front, while Amos Mackrill and Cameron Hellowell exploited the space on the counterattack.
The comeback began when Connor Sutcliffe fired home a stunning strike from distance to pull Halifax back into the match.
Crane then levelled the scores, applying the finish after excellent work from Love. With momentum firmly behind them, Halifax kept pushing and eventually found the winner when Sutcliffe reacted quickest to convert the rebound from Casey Marshall's saved effort.
The victory ended Driffield's unbeaten record and secured three valuable points for Halifax.
Sutcliffe was named Player of the Match after his decisive two-goal contribution.
Ladies’ 1st XI Continue Perfect Start
Halifax Ladies' 1st XI made it seven wins from seven with a deserved 3-1 victory away at Wakefield.
A competitive opening spell saw little separate the teams, but Halifax eventually made their pressure count from a penalty corner, with Robyn Fawkes applying the finishing touch.
Becca Brown doubled the lead shortly afterwards, reacting quickest after a Dani Parker effort.
There was a brief setback before half-time when Parker's disagreement with an umpiring decision earned her a yellow card, but Halifax remained firmly in control.
Wakefield reduced the deficit early in the second half, creating a few nervous moments, before Amy March settled the contest with an excellent long-range finish.
March was named Player of the Match after a commanding display in midfield as Halifax extended their magnificent winning streak.
Men’s 2nd XI Return to Winning Ways
Halifax Men's 2nd XI secured an impressive 3-1 victory over Acomb at Park Lane.
Cam Kew gave Halifax the perfect start, converting a penalty corner before doubling the advantage later in the half following excellent build-up play involving Ethan Geal.
The visitors became increasingly frustrated and picked up a series of cards as Halifax maintained control.
Nicky Elson effectively secured the points with the goal of the game, finishing on his reverse stick into the top corner after an excellently timed run from Graham Rogers created the opening.
Acomb pulled one back late on, but Halifax comfortably saw the game out.
Geal earned Player of the Match after another energetic display and an excellent assist.
Ladies’ 2nd XI Dig Deep for Three Points
Halifax Ladies' 2nd XI claimed a hard-fought 1-0 home victory over Slazenger 3s.
In a closely fought contest, Evelyn Rooke scored the only goal of the game during the first half.
Halifax defended resolutely throughout the remainder of the match and held firm to secure another valuable three points and continue their strong campaign.
Men’s 3rd XI Denied Late On
Halifax Men's 3rd XI were unfortunate to come away empty-handed after a narrow 2-1 defeat away at Aire Valley.
The visitors took the lead when Steve Fawkes picked out Dom Taylor with a long pass and he finished confidently.
Aire Valley equalised shortly before half-time and the teams remained evenly matched throughout much of the second period.
Halifax created opportunities to regain the lead, with Toby Egan-Brook and Jack Greenwood combining well to create a golden chance, but the opportunity went begging.
A late lapse in concentration ultimately allowed Aire Valley to snatch the winner.
CJ Knight was named Player of the Match after an excellent performance in midfield.
Ladies’ 3rd XI Face Tough Test
The Ladies' 3rd XI were beaten 6-0 away at Wakefield 4th XI.
Despite the scoreline, Halifax continued to compete throughout against strong opposition and will look to build on the experience gained as the season progresses.
Round-Up
Across the club, Halifax recorded four victories and two defeats from six fixtures. The Ladies' 1st XI remain perfect after seven matches, while the Men's 1st XI produced the result of the day by ending Driffield's unbeaten start to the campaign.
