Halifax HC Extend Unbeaten Runs Despite Mixed Weekend Results
Halifax Hockey Club enjoyed another busy weekend of league action, with victories for the Ladies' 1st XI and Men's 2nd XI, a battling draw for the Men's 1st XI and several encouraging performances throughout the club. The Ladies' 1st XI remain unbeaten at the top of the table, while the Men's 2nd XI returned to winning ways with an impressive display at Park Lane.
Men’s 1st XI Frustrated After Letting Lead Slip
Halifax Men's 1st XI were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw at home to Hull 2s after twice taking control of a closely contested encounter.
As they have done in recent weeks, Halifax started brightly and created several early opportunities, although converting chances remained problematic. Cameron Hellowell came closest in the opening exchanges, although one particularly ambitious attempt resulted in a memorable air swing rather than a shot on goal.
Defensively, Halifax looked assured with Pat Jupp, Ivan Stark and Ben Speak moving the ball well from the back and helping the hosts control large periods of possession.
The breakthrough eventually came early in the second half when Ethan Geal and Jacob Maclean bundled the ball over the line. The goal was awarded to Geal, marking a deserved first goal for the Men's 1st XI after a series of energetic and influential performances.
Hull responded quickly with an equaliser before Halifax regained the lead through Harry Crane. Finishing off a rapid counterattack, Crane unleashed an unconventional effort from the top of the circle that somehow beat the goalkeeper and found the net.
At 2-1, Halifax looked well placed to claim all three points but were punished after switching off defensively, allowing Hull to tap home an equaliser at the far post.
A late Halifax rally produced several near misses, but the winning goal would not come.
Ivan Stark was named Player of the Match after another commanding display at the heart of the defence.
Ladies’ 1st XI Make it Six on the Trot
Halifax Ladies' 1st XI were awarded a 5-0 walkover victory after bottom-of-the-table Scarborough were unable to fulfil the fixture.
While the squad would have preferred to earn the points on the pitch, the result extends their unbeaten start to the season to six consecutive victories and keeps them firmly established at the top end of the table.
The team will return to action on Halloween weekend looking to continue their outstanding start to the campaign.
Men’s 2nd XI Return to Winning Ways
Halifax Men's 2nd XI bounced back from last week's disappointment with an impressive 5-2 victory over Leeds University 2s at a sunny Park Lane.
The home side made a blistering start and effectively put the game beyond their opponents inside the opening ten minutes.
Top scorer Cam Kew struck twice, first from a penalty corner and then after being picked out by John Horsley. Horsley then added a goal of his own from close range as Halifax raced into a 3-0 lead.
Excellent movement from Bryn Hans up front, combined with the passing range of Kew and Fred Denton in midfield, ensured Halifax remained in control throughout the first half.
Nicky Elson extended the lead to 4-0 shortly after the restart before Leeds briefly threatened a comeback by scoring twice in quick succession.
Any nerves were calmed when Denton threaded an excellent pass into the circle for Jack Laycock, who finished neatly to restore Halifax's three-goal advantage and complete the scoring.
The result keeps Halifax firmly in the promotion conversation and demonstrated an excellent response to the previous week's narrow defeat.
Ladies’ 2nd XI Battle Hard Against League Leaders
Halifax Ladies' 2nd XI suffered a 5-0 defeat against an unbeaten Aire Valley 1st XI side.
Despite the scoreline, Halifax never stopped working and produced a performance that earned plenty of praise from teammates and coaches alike. The visitors may have taken the points, but Halifax showed resilience and determination throughout the contest.
Special thanks were given to Dani Parker for her coaching support from the sidelines.
Grace Creighton collected Player of the Match after an outstanding display that featured numerous crucial tackles and tireless work across the pitch.
Men’s 3rd XI Narrowly Beaten
Halifax Men's 3rd XI were unfortunate to come away empty-handed after a closely fought 1-0 defeat away at Aire Valley.
The match was evenly balanced throughout, with the only goal arriving in the first half when Aire Valley took advantage of a rare opportunity.
Halifax responded well and enjoyed long spells of possession. The link-up play between juniors Toby Egan-Brook, Sam Rawlinson and Jack Greenwood regularly caused problems, while several penalty corners and attacking opportunities went narrowly unconverted.
Aire Valley emerged more organised after the break and pushed Halifax back at times, but goalkeeper Alex Eastwood produced a series of fine saves to keep the visitors firmly in the contest.
Despite their efforts, Halifax could not find an equaliser and were forced to settle for a narrow defeat.
Eastwood was deservedly named Player of the Match, while Greenwood impressed on his Men's 3rd XI debut against experienced opposition.
Ladies’ 3rd XI Face Strong Opposition
The Ladies' 3rd XI were beaten 3-0 by a well-organised Ben Rhydding 4th XI side.
Although the visitors proved difficult opponents, Halifax continued to work hard throughout and will take valuable experience from the encounter as their season progresses.
Round-Up
Across the club, Halifax recorded three wins, one draw and three defeats from seven fixtures. The standout story remains the unbeaten Ladies' 1st XI, who have now won six matches in succession, while the Men's 2nd XI responded emphatically to return to winning ways.
The weekend also provided further evidence of the club's strength in depth, with several juniors producing impressive performances across the men's teams and players throughout the club continuing to demonstrate the commitment and spirit that define Halifax Hockey Club.
