A fantastic first win of the season for Men's seconds against Doncaster, saw them thrash their opposition 7-1 with star striker Horsley bagging a hat-trick

Halfax 2nds 7 - 1 Doncaster 4ths

Scorers: Horsley (3), Hellowell (2), Arch. Fawkes

The narrow gap between success and failure was gloriously illustrated on Saturday when Halifax 2′s gained their first league win of the season.

Fielding a changed side for the fifth conseutive match, Fax moved into the match with six players unavailable. The makeshift team still had a solid look to it and it did not take long for the patchwork side to exert it’s infleunce on the game.

The midfield trio of Simon Arch, David Spencer and Peter Balmforth complemented each other as if they had played together for seasons. Each had their own strength to add to the team and it was Arch’s direct running that was causing the visitors most problems. The probing of the midfielder produced the first goal for youngster Hellowell and he was able to finish off a sublime move himself for the second.

Striker John Horsley claimed the third from the penalty spot for a comfortable and totally unexpected half time lead.

Doncaster were posing a threat in the game, but the assured performance of James Smith in goal and the immaculate pairing of Stephen Fawkes and Graham Rodgers snuffed out the dangermen in the visitors front line. Ably assisted by Jamie Maddock and Trevor Love, the home rearguard had a very solid look about it.

The next goal was likely to determine the outcome of the contest and to the relief of the many home spectators it fell to Halifax. The interplay orchestrated by David Spencer was a pleasure to behold and Hellowell extended the lead. Fawkes drifted upfield to score a rare goal and finally John Horsley completed his hat trick with a typical poacher’s finish, cleverly deflecting the ball from a wayward Willis strike.

The home side only used 11 players for the whole match which was a first for the season. All the team left the pitch to an ovation from the many home players from other teams, who had stayed to watch. The victory gave the team a positive goal difference and move them many places up the table.
