Leeds University 2nd 2 – 3 Halifax 1st
Scorers : Greenwood, Crawford, Walsh
Building on the success of Saturday’s win, Halifax 1st team travelled away to meet Leeds University 2nds in a rearranged North league match.
With the hope of gaining another 3 points, Halifax started strong and brought their passing game to the young university side. With end to end play and good work from both sides, Halifax were rewarded when Jo Love earned a penalty stroke in front of goal that captain Jane Greenwood slotted away – putting the away side ahead.
Both teams continued to work hard with some excellent play by the Halifax defence and keeper Sharon Crawshaw. Halifax‘s midfield and forwards put pressure on the home side, however, just before half time the home side managed to break though to slot away the equaliser.
Into the second half, both teams played some good hockey and the home side were rewarded after some good work led to their 2nd goal putting them ahead. Halifax never stopped the high work rate and continued to put on the pressure, stopping the home side playing those long balls through to their attackers.
Halifax had a change of formation, with Zoe Hartley slotting back into midfield playing her first game back after injury, and were eventually rewarded with their equaliser after Emma Crawford got her third goal of the weekend, after converting a well planned short corner.
With the university side unable to penetrate the Halifax defence the away side continued to put on the pressure and were rewarded with a winning goal when Kate Walsh, pounced on the University defender stealing the ball, then winning a one on one with the keeper, to slot away the winning goal.
A fantastic weekend, with Halifax gaining 6 points moving them towards the middle of the North League table.
