Men’s 1s never really needed to get out of second gear as they ran out 4-0 winners away at bottom of the league University of Leeds

University of Leeds 1s 0 - 4 Halifax 1s

It was a late start for Fax in Leeds against bottom of the league and win less Uni of Leeds. The team were keen to avoid any banana skin result and stuck to their task well and finishing with a 4-0 victory.

Patience was the key and Halifax soon settled into a rhythm of passing and moving and trying to utilise the spaces in the corners behind the Leeds defence. Josh Sutcliffe, Elliott Bullick and Michael Jones were dominating the midfield with John Horsley and Cam Kew causing problems for the Leeds defence with clever runs.

It wasn’t long before Halifax had their first penalty corner following good link up play between Jones and Bullick. This led to Fax taking the lead as Kew deflected in a low drag flick from Jones that left the keeper with no chance.

Jones sent Horsley clear one on one with the keeper, but having gone around the keeper he couldn’t finish from the tight angle. Substitute strikers David Wheatley and Josh Barron then linked well with Sutcliffe and the midfielder’s return ball wide to Barron was smashed home first time for a 2-0 lead.

Halifax were comfortably on top in the run up to half time. Wheatley hit the post after a clever layoff from Jones and Barron jinked his way past two defenders before firing a shot just wide of the top right hand corner. 2-0 at half time.

It was more of the same in the second half with keeper Lee Wheatcroft and defenders Jakob Morley, Jack Thompson and Sam Spencer having very little to do.

Bullick and Kew had good chances saved before Jones made it 3-0, firing low into the bottom corner from a penalty corner.

Horsley made it 4-0 towards the end of the half, deflecting in a brilliant Jones cross into the D.

Halifax remain comfortably in 4th place, well clear of 5th and with a game in hand on the top 3. With games against the top 3 to come as part of their final games the run in to the season should prove to be an interesting one.
