The latest U14 girls Yorkshire league games were held at Darton College near Barnsley on Sunday 9th February

GAME 1 : SELBY 2 – 0 HALIFAX

Halifax started the first game of their competition half asleep and failed to get to grips with the game. A strong Selby side dominated the mid field and quickly broke down either wings stretching Halifax to their limits. The pressure eventually told as Selby opened the scoring with a shot deflecting off the keepers kicker into the far corner. Halifax struggled to find any form or passing rhythm and this lack of possession resulted in Selby extending their lead. To rub salt into the wound Halifax dynamo midfielder Lucy Raine sustained a broken thumb and therefore missed the following two games.

GAME 2 : NORTHALLERTON 0 – 1 HALIFAX

After some harsh words from the coach Halifax started their next game in a far more position and active manner. Halifax quickly took control of midfield through Katie Illingworth and Robyn Fawkes with chances falling to Jodie Staples and Lydia Robinson only for their shots to be saved by the keeper. Halifax continued to press and a foul was awarded just inside Northallerton’s 25, Fawkes quickly took a self pass before the opposition had time to regroup and after beating two players calmly slipped the ball past the keeper to give Halifax the lead. As Halifax continued to press for their second goal they were caught on the counter attack by Northallerton but this was effectively dealt with by the defensive work of Amber Penny Ward, Anna Butterworth, Emma Whitaker and Jess Wilson. Halifax continued to move the ball well using both wing players Niamh O'Callaghan and Annie Denton but the second goal did not materialise.

GAME 3 : LEEDS ADEL 0 – 1 HALIFAX

The result of the final game would see either team securing promotion to the next division. The teams seemed equally matched with both sides battling for midfield possession. Each team threatened on the counter attack but it was Halifax who came the closest to opening the scoring with Fawkes bursting through from midfield only for the shot to be lacking any direction. Leeds Adel pressed forward but dogged defending by Penny-Ward, Butterworth, Whitaker and Wilson kept the Leeds Adel attack at bay. A good ball forward by Illingworth found Fawkes midway into the Leeds Adel half, another skilful run saw Fawkes enter the opponents ‘D’ and this time the shot found the far corner of the goal to give Halifax the lead. Halifax had chances through Robinson and Staples to extend their lead but their shots were well saved, also a shot by Denton narrowly went wide. As timed ticked away Leeds Adel had a string of several short corners but were unable to convert any of them with fine saves being produced by debutant goalkeeper Leah O'Connel. Halifax hung on to grab the win together with promotion.
